Day 86: A Rude Awakening
(In case it’s not obvious, this story is told as if Thomas, my flatmate, were writing it.)
Hello! I’m Thomas, one of the three Germans living with Mario. The story I want to tell you happened a few days ago. I was peacefully sleeping in my room when I heard some noises around me. But I was so comfortable, with such a blissful expression on my face, that my subconscious decided to ignore them, and I kept on sleeping. I was so cozy...
Suddenly, someone sits on top of me. I assume they didn’t realise there was someone in the bed and just sat down. In fact, they had even left their coat and scarf beside me. I wake up startled—and see that it’s Mario. Mario? What the hell is Mario doing in my room? What the hell is Mario doing in front of my bed?
Wait a second.
What’s going on? These sheets aren’t mine… I don’t recognise the posters on the walls… Mario’s expression of surprise is even bigger than mine… and the room is way smaller than mine…
OH MY GOD! I’m sleeping in Mario’s bed!!!
I’m completely confused. I jump up, mumbling apologies as I rush out of the room. I don’t understand anything. When I finally reach my own room, I sit down and try to figure out how on earth I ended up in his bed. It’s Wednesday, 9:30 in the morning...
AAAAAAHHHHH!!!! I remember now!
Mario had left for class (he has an early class at 7:30 AM) and had forgotten to turn off his alarm. The alarm went off at 8 AM. And it’s a horrible alarm, it sounds like a fire truck siren. Since I live in the room next door, I must have gotten up, still half-asleep, to turn it off. I don’t remember it clearly, but I was probably cursing Mario’s entire family, friends, and acquaintances as I did it. After I turned it off, I must have been so drowsy that I collapsed onto his bed and fell asleep.
Most likely, without thinking, I pulled the covers up to my nose. When Mario came back, he didn’t realise I was there and tossed his coat and scarf on top of me, covering me even more. He read the newspaper, as he does every morning. And when he sat on the bed to get his bag ready for the library… well, you already know what happened next.
I didn’t see Mario again until the evening, and when I did, I couldn’t even scold him for forgetting to turn off his alarm (I had fallen asleep in his bed!). Instead, I just apologised again. He took it really well and laughed a lot—because he knew exactly what had happened.
