Day 242: Mother’s Day
Today, Sunday May 14th, it’s Mother’s Day in Germany. I don’t know why it’s celebrated a week later. I suppose it’s because here Mother’s Day has always been celebrated on this date, and in Spain, when El Corte Inglés imported the holiday, they must have either made a mistake or found that the original date didn’t suit them.
The German tradition on Mother’s Day is to give flowers. It’s the traditional and favorite gift among Germans. For example: Angela Merkel (who isn’t a mother) was given a bouquet of red-orange roses by the florists’ union. And the truth is, this is just another excuse Germans have to give each other flowers. They give flowers far more often than in Spain. There’s always someone carrying flowers on the tram. And it’s not just men giving flowers to their girlfriends or wives — it also happens the other way around.
As for me, I’m going to spend Mother’s Day at home finishing a protocol for the Analytical Chemistry lab (and translating it into a language the professors can actually understand), while the rest of the Spaniards will go watch the Final Four of the Saxony Cup — because the Dresden team, where Nacho plays, the Titans, has made it to the final.
