Day 77: Frenadol with Spekulatius
Today marks the opening of the Striezelmarkt in Dresden, the quintessential German Christmas market, where you can sip Glühwein (literally incandescent wine—hot wine with lemon, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves) and snack on Spekulatius (cinnamon cookies with nuts) or Glasierte Äpfel (candied apples).
The Striezelmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany, dating back to 1434, when Saxon King Frederick II withdrew the privileges of the local meat market—originally just a one-day event—to introduce a Christmas market, where regional merchants could sell their nuts and cakes for Christmas Eve. Today, the Striezelmarkt lasts throughout Advent and is a major local event.
However, I won't be able to attend the opening ceremony of the DLXXI Striezelmarkt (yes, the 571st one!), where they will be handing out 3,000 kilos of a giant cake called Schweren Riesenstollen. Unfortunately, I've caught a ferocious cold, leaving my tonsils swollen and my nose completely blocked.
Still, I have full faith that the Frenadol sachets I'm taking will help me get back to my relaxed Erasmus student life as soon as possible.
