Day 79: Lost in Dresden

Almost every weekend, someone suggests a trip to somewhere in Germany. Two weekends ago, for example, it was Nuremberg. Last weekend, it was Prague. This weekend, it was Frankfurt am Main. Erasmus student trips are always fun. You have a great time. Because, of course, the destination is always quite far away, so you spend the long journey joking and chatting. Once you arrive, you don’t have much time to explore (you’ve spent a big part of the weekend just getting there, you’re tired, it’s freezing cold, and it gets dark almost instantly…), so you speed through all the sightseeing as quickly as possible before taking shelter in a bar to enjoy a local beer (every city has its own brand…) with your travel companions.

Honestly, these trips are great, but they do have one small downside… they’re expensive! Well, actually, they’re not that expensive. A well-planned weekend trip usually costs around €50. The real issue is going on a trip every single weekend. For me, after my trip to Rostock, I had enough travel for the whole year (2005, that is). The thing is, I’m broke. Life in Germany is more expensive than I expected, and every month, I end up spending more than I had planned (I thought €300 a month would be enough).

That’s why I’m in Dresden now, out of money, trying to come up with a plan to go out for a bit tonight.
