Day 131: Slubing all day
Exam period has arrived, and I have to study flat out. At home, my flatmates are around all day blasting music and playing online games like Counter Strike, shouting at each other from room to room with phrases like: “WATCH OUT, YOU’RE GONNA GET KILLED!” or “BEHIND YOU!!!!”. I generally don't like studying at home because of the thousands of distractions it offers. In Salamanca, I always used to go study at the Abraham Zacut Science Library. Here, my flatmates give me yet another reason to go study at the library…
Dresden and the University have the most beautiful and largest library I've ever seen. It's called SLUB (Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, which means something like Saxon State and University Library). It opened in 2002, is mostly underground, and has thousands of hidden spots where you can study without anyone bothering you, or a large Lesesaal (reading room), where the silence is absolute (even coughing is frowned upon...). Here's the link to a virtual tour of the library: don't worry that it's in German; the only word you need to know is Ebene, which means floor/level, and the rest is just clicking on the photos. It's an incredible library. Although I think if we combined all the libraries at the University of Salamanca (Law + Sciences + Pharmacy + Medicine + Arts + ...) they would greatly exceed this one in terms of surface area and study spaces. In terms of collections, the Salamanca libraries don't surpass it, at least in sciences, which is what I know (Note for chemists: they have the entire Chemical Abstracts, which takes up whole shelves... One day I'll get a photo with it).
To sum up: I spend all day studying in a very beautiful library because my exams start in two days.
